Yeseul O is a digital artist based in New York, showcasing digital works using augmented reality (AR) and 3D technology.
After graduating with a bachelor's degree in economics from Yonsei University, she pursued her long-held dream of becoming a designer by earning a second bachelor's degree in graphic design from the School of Visual Arts in New York. After graduating, she worked as a designer at global companies such as Google, Sagmeister & Walsh, Turner Duckworth, Verizon, IDEO, Tiffany & Co. and so on. However, longing for a life where she could be anything and do anything, she went on to pursue a master's degree at NYU and started her career as an artist.
Her signature project, 'Metabun_ny,' is a daily updated digital project where Metabun_ny in the digital world represents her alternative ego, symbolizing an independent and autonomous life. Through this project, she explores her own transformation and growth, sharing various digital selves with the world every day.
Yeseul O’s work extends the boundaries of traditional art by exploring the AR that exists at the intersection of digital and real worlds. We live in an era where we exist simultaneously in both the real and digital worlds, and cannot imagine a world without digital screens. The digital dependency of modern society has fundamentally changed our behaviors, and AR, existing at the boundary between the digital and real worlds, visually represents the lives of modern people. By artistically reinterpreting how digital and AR technologies transform and expand reality, audiences can experience her works through various interactions.
오예슬은 뉴욕을 기반으로 활동하는 디지털 아티스트로, 증강현실(AR)과 3D 기술을 활용하여 디지털 작품을 선보이고 있다.
연세대학교 경제학과 학사를 졸업한 뒤에도 오랜 꿈이었던 디자이너가 되기 위해 뉴욕의 School of Visual Arts 에서 그래픽 디자인으로 두번째 학사를 졸업했다. 졸업 이후 Google, Verizon, Sagmeister & Walsh, IDEO, Turner Duckworth, Tiffany & Co. 등 글로벌 기업들에서 디자이너로 재직했으나 어떤 것이든 될 수 있고, 무엇이든 할 수 있는 자유로운 삶에 대한 동경으로 NYU 석사 진학, 작가 생활을 시작했다.
작가의 대표적인 프로젝트 'Metabun_ny'는 매일 업데이트되는 디지털 프로젝트로, 디지털 세계에서 메타버니는 작가의 대체 자아이자 독립적이고 주체적인 삶을 상징하는 시각적 표현이다. 이 프로젝트를 통해 작가는 자신의 변화와 성장을 탐구하며 다양한 디지털 자아를 매일 세상과 공유하고 있다.
메타버니들은 각기 다른 특징과 이야기를 가진 고유한 아트웍으로, 하나하나 작가의 수작업으로 완성된다. 작가가 매일 하나씩 일상에서 영감을 받아 표현하는 999일의 서로 다른 메타버니들은 현재 완성을 향해 나아가고 있다.
또한 작가의 작업은 전통적인 예술의 경계를 확장하면서 디지털과 현실의 경계에 존재하는 증강현실을 탐구하고 있다. 우리는 현실과 디지털 세상에 동시에 존재하는 시대에 살고 있으며, 디지털 스크린 없는 세상은 상상할 수 없다. 현대 사회의 디지털 의존성은 우리의 행동 방식을 근본적으로 변화시켰고, 디지털 세상과 현실의 경계에 존재하는 증강현실은 현대인의 삶을 시각적으로 표현한다. 작가는 이 부분에 주목하여 디지털과 증강현실 기술이 현실을 어떻게 변화시키고 확장하는지를 예술적 경험을 통해 재해석하며, 관객들은 작가의 작품을 다양한 상호작용을 통해 경험할 수 있다.
